where is your favorite (cheap!) vacation spot?
my boyfriend and i are looking to go somewhere in january. i think the most we want to spend is about $2000 together, including air and hotel and whatever else (an all-inclusive resort would be ideal).
the only thing is, we have no idea where to go! we would LOVE to go to hawaii, but i think that’s a bit out of the question…it’s a little out of our budget. we could probably go up to $2500 total, but not higher than that. he’ll have just graduated college in december, i’ve still got another semester left after that, so we’re kinda broke…ish. (we’re forgetting xmas presents this year so we can save up to go away!)
so we’re flying out of chicago, at least 1 of us will be able to use a “student” discount if applicable, i also have a AAA membership…we just want to go somewhere warm, for about 4-5 days. we can leave on a weekday and return on a weekday or whatnot, to keep costs down.. any suggestions at all would help! thanks!
Me and my wife love taking a few days off and hitting up some beach and sun when ever we can, but they do run a range of prices. We did Hawaii and it was awesome, but that was for our honeymoon so we were willing to spend a little more. That will run you closer to 4000 to hit up the island.
I’m a firm believer that as long as you have some sun, a beach, a beer, and a loved one, you can have fun anywhere.
Some of your cheeper choices are the Dominican Republic, either Porta Plata, or Punta Cana. There are some nice resorts there, and most of them are all inclusive which is a huge relief on the budget. The place we stayed in the Dominican, was was in Punta Canaal and it was alright, but the beach was nothing to write home about. The pool was great, the rooms not great, but it was sunny and relaxing. If I went back I’d hit up the side of the island that has the white sand beaches.
Mexico has a ton of affordable resorts too. My friends just got back from the Myan Riviara and had a blast. It is also a little more affordable, and the beaches are great.
All in all you have to remember that if you aren’t going to Hawaii you are going to be going to a 3rd world country. A 3 star resort in a third world country is MUCH different then one in America. The rooms are often minimal, but you won’t spend much time there, and the time you do spend you wont be watching tv 
As long as it is clean, has a beach, a safe in the room, then you are singing.
Just do some research before you go. Tripadviser.com is the best sight for reviewing places. Take it all in stride. Some people review every place against staying at the 4 seasons, so they are always disapointed.
Also Travelzoo.com has usually got some cheep full vacation deals. You can always look at what they have, then whisk off to Tripadviser and see if the resort is anygood.
It is always a little bit of a gamble when you go, so just make sure it has a nice pool, beach access, and the food is edible.
