Amtrak train to Chicago – safe?

I'm on the train from Waterloo Planning, in Chicago, IL this weekend. I would get off at Union Station and walk to Grant Park Have you ever done before? Would you say it is safe to do at night? Please explain why or why not! Thank you!

Completely secure. You will see homeless people and those, but you're in the middle of the loop, not in a shady area or anything. It is a little further than I do when I each bag while wearing. A taxi would probably be less than $ 10 between the destinations … So I would just in a taxi outside the station or it very easy should hail to be fed to jump.

Satellite TV … why can my local news channel …?

I live in Massachusetts, about 30 minutes from the Rhode Iceland border and about 45 minutes Boston. I have DirecTV with local channels package. The problem is that I will not be able to get any Boston channels, but I get channels from Providence, Atlanta, Chicago, etc. I used to have cable television, and I used to channels from Boston, Providence, etc., to also get all the way from Portugal. So now I can not even my Clock local news, as I used to do be able to. What should I do? Should I just return to the more expensive cable TV, even my one-year contract is up?

My sister had the same problem with DirecTV in Wyoming. She switched to Dish Network, and now they get local channels in addition to all other channels. What they do is to install two dishes – one is for the regular programming is part of the local programming. Try calling Dish Network and see whether local networks can offer in your environment. It is much cheaper to go this way as the high price of cable pay.

Takin the route of Long-Distance Grandparenting

The distance from Long-Distance Grandparenting by Arlene Uslands

When I learned that my 2 year old grandson Eric and his parents wanted to move to 8,000 miles away from me, all the way to Guam, my reaction was most likely that of a friend who told me matched, "If my grandson moved so far away, I would absolutely die!" And I thought I would from a broken heart Maybe -. have you had similar experiences may not be as great a distance as the other side of the world (I do not hope for your sake, and the grand childrens'!) but far enough away so that you jealous of your friends whose grandchildren live with the car or reach on foot.

For months before Eric left, every time I'm with him, all I could think that was over soon, I would not be with him, and I found it difficult to sleep or concentrate or eat. But when the time finally came and he left, I began to understand that it do anything I could to to change the situation – that the only I could change what the situation was my reaction to the. So I heard myself feeling sorry for, and began to read more about my grandson, and what I could to the transition as easy as possible for him to make.

First, I have two things which suggested a friend who happens to a family therapist, you may wish to try if your grandchild or grandchildren off:

1) Pack a box of toys from your home, your grandchild particularly like, and send it to his new address, so the child will still feel a connection to your home.

2) Buy a small photo album (I bought me with Mickey Mouse on the cover) and take pictures of the family – even your pets, of course, if you have any – just like certain things in and around your home, your grandchildren love was: – a musical teddy bear, a toy ice cream cart, books you read to the child before bed, one or two games, etc., and write a caption below each image. (Always the teacher, I speculated that this might help are labels would learn to read Eric?) After my son made the toys and books from my house and the small photo album a solid hit with Eric!

After Eric moved away, I found, both by comparison with other "long-distance grandparents and try my own ideas, that there are many things that do you can to keep the relationship between you and your grandchildren safe and sound. Here are some other ideas that are well worked for me:

Audio cassettes. This can be used in many different ways, and your grandchildren can play them over and over again.

Shortly after Eric moved away, I sent him a cassette, which I called "Eric's Friends" recorded the voices to which I of people who were important to him at the time. Some of the people I personally recorded, while others which I taped over the phone by buying a low-cost Telephone recording device. Each person said something else to Eric had to remind them of special times shared together, and at the end of the message, he or she ask, "Do you know who that is? "it would be like a little game for him ..

You can read books on the history tape, and mail the book together with the cassette, so your grandchildren can hear the pages turn and look at the pictures as they read the story, or if they are old enough to follow the words, even as you read them aloud. Although today, iPods are big business, you can still buy cassette recorder / player. I know because I bought one only for stories for my newest grandchild, two and three and a half year-old record. Of course, you must make sure that your grandchild (or grandchildren) also has a tape recorder or as otherwise he or she can listen to your tapes? If the child is not one … also have what for grandparents?

Videotapes. Who invented the video camera (and the webcam, as discussed later) must be a "long distance grandparents." Been If you can not see your grandchildren in person, and they can not see you, the next best thing is to see each other on video. If you own a video camera, try to borrow or rent one.

When Eric little used video cameras to be much larger and more complicated and much more expensive than today was. They now sell video cameras in stores, in the Your pocket or purse fits.

Eric turned two a month after he moved away, and knowing that we did not celebrate his birthday with him, I collected all the Family together with a "Happy Birthday" to make videos. We all wore hats birthday, including the two family dogs, we sang to him, and recited his favorite rhymes and stories. Making the video made us feel that we are a part of Eric's birthday, although we are 8000 miles away, were. I continued to make videotapes of the family every time we met for a holiday, and of course each of us always have a special message for Eric.

Ask someone to videotape you read history Books read, and send the child the book along with the video tape – though today, would you rather send DVD media (digital video discs). Such as audio cassettes, DVD disks can be played as often as your grandchildren want to see them over and over again. I have many video tapes of Eric, and two of my other grandchildren Ryan and Carly if they were small, I want to have converted to DVD media in the coming days.

Internet Video Communication. Who came up with the idea for Skype (the free, by the way, as long as you call another person with another that has signed, Skype) and other Internet voice-video programs Allow that people do not just talk to each, but to see and talk to each other via the computer, it must be a grandparent whose grandchildren lived far gone. Webcams have been around a number of years, but when, from the first time, saw the picture on the screen was a very small, and there was usually a delay in the sound. Today, as more advances in technology covers the visual part of the entire screen, and you can carry on a conversation with someone or ones on the other side of the country, on the other side of the world. What a fantastic thing for grandparents and grandchildren. Be sure to Skype on the computer if you are not familiar with.

Photos. Photographs are of course one of the best ways to take away some of the distance. I drove continued, Eric photos of people and things he most enjoyed back in Chicago where we lived, and where to send its first two years of life, as well as images of him and my husband and I were put together before his departure. After he came to visit, he had every summer, I sent him a small photo album filled with pictures of things and Places he saw in Chicago, and things we did together. I also sent him an 8-by-10-inch photo of me and my husband, who hung his parents in his room. Not much Chance your grandchildren remember you when they see your face days on the wall of each one.

Once digital cameras came out, my husband and Son both bought one. Sending photos back and forth across the computer is also a wonderful way to stay in touch and to feel like a part of your special grandson Occasions and events, as you look at the photos right before your eyes on the screen.

Gifts will certainly help that In your child's thoughts, and they do not have to be expensive. Even if you're not too handy with arts and crafts (as I am not), it is simple things that appeal to children to do: sock puppets, dolls yarn, and small houses or yards from shoe boxes or other small boxes, for a cost effective animals, dolls, cars and trains discounters now.

Find out about little things that your grandchildren and send them in brightly wrapped packages. Whenever you send your grandchildren a gift, ask their parents show them your picture, so they know that the gift came from you.

Calls you will be important to you, and Their grandchildren. If you talk to your grandchildren to mention the names of people and things with which he or she trusts. Repeat the child's name and the name he or she calling several times during the conversation. Even if your grandchildren are too young to enter a real conversation with, on, they are not too young to listen to.

. Of course, check out, nothing can check out the site – your grandchildren or your grandchildren to you. Finances, work schedules, other family members – Will take place as often these visits to the circumstances from liabilities, etc.

If you want to visit your grandchildren, or they try to visit, is special time to spend with them and without their parents. This one will help you and your grandchildren will be newly discovered and is also the parents some time to themselves – for they will be very grateful. Take the kids to places that they particularly enjoy and places they never have. And for quiet time in the house to be alone with each child is: Stories to read exchange confidences, and to give some extra hugs and kisses.

E-mail. As the children grow older, and learn how to use a computer (and now they are almost born knowing how to use a computer!), E-mail is the best thing ever invented, to the grandparents Logo and grandchildren, who live separately. When Eric and then his younger sister, Carly, older, and I would get an e-mail from them that "Love Nagga (her special name for me) said Xoxoxoxo Please write back." I was overjoyed! Also, do not forget the fax machine when You have one. I will never forget the time I received a fax from Eric (dictated and written by one of his parents) who said: "I am a hundred songs for you . Sing "He was three years old. He is now 18 I'm still waiting!

I'm not saying that I did not want Eric lived closer to me (although he does now). I missed him terribly. But soon after Eric moved away two years ago, I realized that I had two choices: feel sorry for me (envy those friends, their grandson lived on the street "or in the next suburb), or that negative emotional energy at the more positive, constructive attitude of viewing Long-distance Grandparenting as a creative challenge – a challenge to look for things with my grandchildren, that would keep me in their thoughts, prayers and think .. I chose the latter, knowing that "out of sight, out of mind" is only true if you let it.

I hope that if a Long-distance grandparents, you too can learn to meet the challenge, and keep the connection between you and the children strong and deep.
